This statement underlines the value of books. Digitization highlights =
the uniqueness of the original source and changes the book into a new =
artifact. It is a newly valuable artifact for its content and its =
format. Like a rare photograph, it cannot be duplicated exactly. In =
addition, I wonder if ownership of the book by libraries gives them a =
kind of "use"? ownership? Also, textually speaking, it is needed to =
validate any copy.

Grafton, Anthony. Future reading: Digitization and its discontents. The=20
New Yorker, November 5, 2007. *http://tinyurl.com/2qvp2j *
An excerpt:
"Sit in your local coffee shop, and your laptop can tell you a lot. If=20
you want deeper, more local knowledge, you will have to take the=20
narrower path that leads between the lions and up the stairs. There-as=20
in great libraries around the world-you'll use all the new sources...But =

these streams of data, rich as they are, will illuminate, rather than=20
eliminate, books and prints and manuscripts that only the library can=20
put in front of you. The narrow path still leads, as it must, to crowded =

public rooms where the sunlight gleams on varnished tables, and=20
knowledge is embodied in millions of dusty, crumbling, smelly,=20
irreplaceable documents and books."
Bernie Sloan
